Tips to Improve Your Home Security When You Are Short on Money

Changing old locks to brand new high security locks in a residence in Miami FL

Smart gates, smart locks and 360 surround security cameras all represent the pinnacle of current technology for securing your home, but the annual costs all add up and not everyone is in the financial position to go down this route. At Quickly Locksmith here in Miami, we are available to help if a smart security system is what you desire, but even if it isn’t and your budget is slightly more modest, there are a range of other solutions to choose from. Here are some of our suggestions on how to improve your home’s security, even with a tight budget.

Make sure the door and lock match well:

Smart locks and high-end security systems definitely have their place, but they’re just not necessary for many installations. Many consumers are in the market for a good quality, solid lock to secure their front and rear doors and we’d agree with this idea. Ensuring you chose a good quality lock is important as the leading brands only require minimal ongoing maintenance. Parts are usually available cheaply and guides can be found online for the DIY-enthusiasts among-st you.

What’s important to watch out for is that the materials match each other in their strength. For example, a strong lock used with a weak door can lead to problems such as the cylinder cracking the frame from the inside which can be a costly repair. A qualified locksmith can recommend a good combination of lock and door to match any budget.

Other tricks:

At Quickly Locksmith we also offer commercial locksmith services in Miami and one thing that we often suggest to small business and residential customers alike is to place a small camera in plain sight. It doesn’t even really have to be wired in and working as its presence along can offer a strong deterrent to would-be thieves.

As the leading commercial locksmith service in Miami, we’ve also learned that sometimes an alarm is a good investment. Again, it doesn’t even need to be connected to an ongoing service and the sound alone can be enough to send an unwitting burglar on their way.

Office Security: Protecting Your Commercial Property

Our Local Locksmith Technician provides locksmith services for Armani stores In Miami FL

It can be quite surprising to know just how vulnerable some commercial properties actually are. What’s more, the biggest shocker of all is that most small to medium sized business owners aren’t even aware of the possible security risks their commercial properties are at risk to.

At Quickly Locksmiths, we’re not in the game of trying to scare you into action – many of the risks such as burglary are obvious. Instead, we want to work with you to keep your business and commercial property safe. We offer a range of services that can help including a 24/7 emergency call out by one of our experienced certified locksmiths should it be necessary!

Reliable security audits:

Every time your business goes through a significant change, whether it’s the beginning stages, moving into a new commercial property or expanding your staff and/or locations, it’s the perfect time to have a security audit carried out. Quickly Locksmiths can help, enabling you to stay on top of security and continue to be well informed. You wouldn’t risk it with other aspects of your business, so don’t let the side down with something so important.

Most emergency locksmiths that deal with after hours break-ins would agree that negligence or cost-cutting is rarely the reason and the culprit is often a lack of information. A well carried out security audit can bring to your attention all of the soft spots and give you the information to allow you to make informed decision on what needs to be done.

Internal vs external threats:

A commercial locksmith is insured and experienced and we keep up to date with the latest technological innovations in the world of security. However, knowledge is key! When deciding how to secure things properly, it’s important to think about everyone who access your premises on a daily basis. Think maintenance workers, employees, clientele, people walking close by and any nearby construction workers. It’s not to suggest that everyone is a suspect. On the contrary, we’re merely suggesting that everything should be considered and that kind of information is exactly what an audit can provide.

When looking for an emergency 24-hour locksmith, don’t hesitate to call Quickly Locksmiths for all your commercial and residential needs.

How to Improve Your Front Doors’ security?

local locksmith services for residential properties in Miami

How to Improve Your Front Doors' security?

local locksmith services for residential properties in Miami

Be aware – this article won’t be full of surprises, we’re not about to tell you anything you don’t already know, that is of course if you are a homeowner for more than a few years; any residential locksmith service available at your neighborhood would highly recommend all home owners to keep your front door security at top shape! As they are the mirror that reflects your property’s security status for anyone watching, good or bad.

Here’s a few locksmith tips!

Yearly Maintenance is the key! Literally…

In Miami for instance, residential locksmith services won’t advise to use anything but a solid-core door for your front entrance, and if you ask us? For all doors accessing your property… Front and Back. These doors can’t be broken with violence and force, any burglar would have to work the lock… after you secure your door, the locks would be the next step. As the leading residential locksmith service in Miami we put great value on a good solid, reliable deadbolt lock. We provide locksmith service 24/7 – you can call Quickly anytime and share your security requirement with our certified locksmith for their tips. Deadbolt will need a yearly reinforcement, usually one you can DIY. If you spot mold / rust this would be the time to replace the lock as it is now much much easier to brake.

Secure the Front Doors’ Environment:

Two easy tips to scare away burglars and enhance your safety; the first – install a peephole. Looking for an emergency locksmith near me service? Most of them could install a peephole right away as this would prevent all those ‘nice’ burglars (we just call them lazy…) that use the old ‘knock on the door’ to get their foot inside, and then knock down the entire door.

The second would be, installing an automated outdoor light around each door accessing your home, as soon as you walk to your door the light immediately opens up and light your way, on the flip side- when the wrong person accessing your door he’ll probably shy away from any lights that might expose him…

We’re here at Quickly locksmith to answer all you home owners out there with any residential locksmith inquiry you might have- don’t hesitate we’re a 24/7 locksmith service!

Doorknob turn but won’t open? how to fix jammed and stuck locks

Door knob turn but won't open? how to fix jammed and stuck locks

locksmith technician prepares the door for installation at a condo in Miami FL

You can slide the key right in and the lock appears to look fine, but it’s just not working. Before you call a locksmith, have a quick read through the following tips for helping fix a jammed or stuck lock.

What’s inside?

A doorknob lock set on your door consists of several basic components. There’s a knob on each side of the door connected by a spindle between them. This spindle runs through the middle of what is known as a latch bolt (which as it sounds is connected to the latch) which in turn engages with the door frame and stops the door from opening. When either of the two doorknobs is rotated, the spindle turns and pulls the latch back, allowing the door to be opened. On most doors, a spring then forces the spindle back so that the latch falls to its resting position – closed – so the door can close once again.

As you can see, these are not the most technically complicated types of lock by any means, so if they’re not working as expected, a quick fix is definitely possible.

First thing to check:

The first thing you’ll need to do is remove the two doorknobs which should simply unscrew. Once removed, take out the spindle so you can see if the latch bolt moves freely as this can often be a problem. Try to clean any rust or mold off with a good quality degreaser/lubricating spray before re-assembling the lock.

Next steps:

If this doesn’t work, it’s possible the problem could lie within the cylinder or with the key. Have a quick check here for obvious signs of rust and try cleaning up as much as possible to see if this rectifies your problem.

As a last consideration, check the door. Paying special attention to the area around the lock, is everything free from obvious damage?

Call the experts:

If you haven’t been able to figure out the problem, a quick google search for ‘locksmiths near me’ will garner a good list of locksmiths. Look for our expert locksmiths at Quickly Locksmith Miami in that list as we’re available 24/7. Give us a call for friendly and reliable service.

How to remove a broken padlock

our local locksmith using pic tool to open a locked door in Miami clients house

How to remove a broken padlock

Re keying a door lock of a residential door, and replacing old lock with a new high security lock

In the vast majority of cases, we’d always suggest breaking off and throwing away a malfunctioning padlock. If it’s giving you hassle, it’s lost its efficacy and it’s no longer safe so it shouldn’t be trusted any longer. Often, it’s not the padlock that is your concern though and you need to make sure what’s inside isn’t damaged or you may well want to prevent damaging your door!

Try cleaning it first:

Before you go ahead and break or cut the lock off, make sure it’s not rusted or otherwise dirty inside. A quick squirt of lubricating oil will help to remove any dirt or rust that may have developed and make sure everything is moving as it should. This easy fix could potentially save breaking the padlock or having to call out a locksmith.

Cut, don’t knock!

Obviously, the lock will likely be entirely unusable once it’s been broken off, but If cleaning hasn’t helped, the only thing left to try next is cutting it off. A strong arm and a pair of bolt cutters are usually all you will need for a normal sized padlock, but on more heavy duty or specialized padlocks, heavy duty tools might be needed.

If you don’t have the necessary tools, find a local locksmith to help. Like ourselves at Quickly Locksmith, many locksmith services offer a 24-hour service so you can get free advice over the phone at any time! Even more reason to give us a call – we promise to arrive with 15-minutes to get you working ASAP!

Easy ways to unlock a door without a key

screwing and finishing brand new door installation including brand new high security lock

Easy ways to unlock a door without a key

Our locksmith technician installing a brand new door in a residential building in Miami FL

If you’ve lost or misplaced your door key, there are always ways to get back inside. This is a job probably best left for the experts but in case you want to try your hard at ‘breaking in’ to your own home, here are some quick tips.

Bouncing the lock

Hint: before trying this method out, it’s worth having an idea about the internal anatomy of a lock, so check out one of our other blog posts entitled “Easy ways to replace your lock tumblers” for more information about just what’s going on inside your lock!

Bouncing the lock is a tried and tested method used by all locksmiths and while it takes some skill, it’s something you can try yourself. You’ll first need a bump key. If for some strange reason you don’t have one lying around, any locksmith should be able to help you out. Once it is inserted into the lock, use a screwdriver or hammer to gently bump on the back of the key. Start gently and gradually add pressure as you feel the bump key sliding into the lock and aligning the internal pins.

Drilling it out

Obviously, this is more drastic and if you’ve reached this point it really is time to call a professional locksmith. If however you’re reading this because no locksmith is available beware that while it will open the door within minute, it will cause extensive damage to the lock and door. Also remember that Quickly Locksmith offer a 24/7 call out service and can usually arrive within 15-minutes to avoid you having to resort to this drastic measure!

Some locks are easier to drill out than others and some incorporate anti-drill pins that are made of strong metal and that make this method ineffective. In general, what you’ll need is a hole punch (to open up the keyhole large enough for the drill bit to enter), a powered drill and a replacement lock to replace what will be a useless hole when you’re finished.

Use the hole punch to open up a hole towards the top of the keyhole. Once big enough for the drill bit to fit, drill a hole through the lock cylinder. This will destroy the internal pins and allow you to force the lock open. As you pass through the lock, you should feel some resistance as the drill bit meets each of the individual pins (most locks have 5 or 6 pins). If at any point the drill starts to bind or bog down, you’ll need to put the drill into reverse and pull it out slightly.

Other methods

Other ‘tricks’ that you have probably seen in movies such as sliding a credit card along the door jamb or picking it with a paper clip or hair pin and mostly fictional with modern locks. Even basic modern locks are much more resilient and not easily opened, even with experience.

If you’d rather not attempt this yourself and want a professional, Quickly Locksmith in Miami are available 24/7.

How to ‘break-in’ your own home when losing/misplacing your keys

Residential locksmith service Miami FL

How to 'break-in' your own home when losing/misplacing your keys?

Our locksmith technician installing a brand new door in a residential building in Miami FL

Oh no, you left your home and just realized the keys are still inside- damn it!

We all do it… not on purpose, but hey it happens… Now’s not the time to get med and call yourself a bunch of names, you’d never let someone else say those nasty things to you right? So stop saying it in your head!

And the most important thing to remember right about now is- don’t take your frustration out on your lock- it’s not its fault, and it’s not going to respond well to anger and attempts to force it open (any other day you’d thank it for being so strong and resilient, probably not today..).

DIY tips that will help you get back inside:

when you forget / misplace your keys, or… when your door is automatically locked and you realize you forgot your keys inside- one second too late you can call a locksmith services to help out or try:

  • Call a neighbor / friend / anyone that might have a spare key
  • Check for open windows / back doors / basement door
  • Use a plastic card to open an unlocked door: insert it slightly and look for the lock mechanism inside. Once you find it start gently shaking the handle and the plastic card will slowly open your lock
  • If you have a screwdriver available you can remove your door knob and then use the screwdriver to simply unlock it

Locksmith Miami – 24/7!

In case you try a bunch of stuff and nothing works- stop there! You don’t want to cause any damages to your door, or further damages to your knob / lock.

Quickly Locksmith is the leading locksmith Miami has to offer; we offer locksmith services around the clock and we come well prepared with our mobile locksmith units to fix your lock, make a spare on site and get you back to your home ASAP.

Antique Lock Repair: How to make old locks new again

Antique Lock Repair: How to make old locks new again

Locks & Keys - Quickly locksmith Miami

Repairing antique locks is a task that requires a certain amount of skill and is best suited to experienced locksmiths. While technology has certainly moved forward throughout the years, antique locks, if maintained well, continue to be strong and effective.

Appearance vs functionality:

While antique locks may look more ornate and aesthetically attractive than plain modern locks, they are often something that thieves take notice of. Impressive looks and decorative designs sometimes go hand-in-hand with questionable security, especially if they haven’t been well maintained.

Good as new:

If the lock is known to be secure and functioning well, improving the outward appearance is an easy DIY fix. Head down to your local locksmith with either lock or a photo in hand and they should be able to offer a polish or paint that can offer a new lease of life to tired locks.

Rust:

If on the other hand the lock doesn’t look so bad on the outside but its not working well internally, rust could be the problem. Gently remove the lock and soak it in vinegar for a few hours to help dissolve any internal rust. If you are dismantling anything, make sure you know how it goes back together first. Once soaked, rinse it off and clean with a good quality decreasing and lubricating spray then allow to dry fully.

Shaky?

If you feel the lock isn’t solid and/or rattles inside when using, something is probably amiss. Taking a look inside might show something obvious, but again, before dismantling, take a photo to make sure you know how to put it all back together. Failing that, take it down to your local locksmith and they will offer expert advice on whether its something that can be salvaged or would best be replaced!

Door lock problems that should not be ignored

Our locksmith technician installing a brand new door in a residential building in Miami FL

Door lock problems that should not be ignored

Our locksmith technician installing a brand new door in a residential building in Miami FL

Your front door lock is likely the most used in the entire house. It is also probably the most important so it stands to reason that it requires the most attention to ensure its working properly. Even expensive, high quality locks require regular maintenance and their original cost or perceived strength shouldn’t fool you into thinking they are ‘install and forget’ items. Any locksmith can repair or replace a broken lock, but why let it get to that point? There are steps you can take yourself to ensure they work well for as long as possible!

Knobs, handles and doors:

A lock is just one part of the complete assembly that keeps you and your family safe. Doorknobs, handles and the door itself work in conjunction with the lock and if one part loosens, the rest often follow.

Check each item individually to make sure they are solid and working smoothly. Exterior locks are exposed to the elements – in some climates they’re subject to freezing winters and sweltering summers. Look for signs of rust and any other hazard such as dirt or mold. Tighten any lose bolts and switch out any easily replaceable part that looks worn as these are the first things burglars look for.

When you move into a new home or have just experienced a break-in, now is a good time to check things over properly. Quickly Locksmith, the leading locksmith in Miami, are able to offer professional services to suit these situations and provide expert advice and/or repairs where necessary.

Broken key:

Before you call out a professional to help with a key that has snapped off in the lock, there are steps you can take yourself. Remove as many pieces of the key as possible. If you can get the whole key out, there is probably nothing else to worry about – new keys can be copied easily and cheaply. However, it is important to check the lock is fully working as it is possible that it could have been the lock that lead to the broken key. Using a different key, check to see that it inserts and retracts freely. Any obstruction could signal a problem and you should have an expert check it out.

How to change combination locks

Opening a locked key-pad safe at our customer hotel in Miami FL

How to change combination locks?

Our locksmith technician unlocks a stuck & locked old safe at a commercial clients business in Miami FL

Any locksmith in Miami would tell you first hand- you must know combination locks inside out- they’re practically anywhere! You can find combination locks installed on many devices such as safes, padlocks (bikes locks etc.), door locks, briefcase locks and they also stand on their own, securing bags, lockers, tents and much more. Here are some excellent locksmith solutions that will assist you with changing combination locks in all their versatile forms.

First thing’s first!

First tip, and it might sound a ted obvious but we’ll say it anyway, when changing a combination locks is to make sure specifically which lock you’re dealing with, and what type of device it is installed upon. Most locksmith solutions require a delicate form of work that synthesis between strength and patience in order to achieve accurate, solid results with minimum (to none) damages around. Therefore any locksmith solutions you might try to DIY would require different instructions- but here are some general guidelines that would (hopefully) be useful.

  • Patience is key! Figure out first what tools you might need to change a particular combination lock and keep them close by.
  • Locate your locks’ specific manufactures instructions on their website.
  • First open the locks and only then start working on changing the combination.
  • Any mistake you make along the way can be fixed, as long as the lock remains open and nothing’s broken.
  • Don’t re-lock the device at any point, unless you’re all done.
