In most cases all that is needed to fix a lock that has fallen out of position is to re-strengthen the same areas (after all, they were chosen for a reason!) New material such as screws or locksmith super glue are the first port of call but should be monitored over a couple of days to ensure it stays strong. It must be noted though that this tip is only useful if the lock is otherwise strong and in good overall condition. If not, call your local locksmith.
First, check the damage:
Sometimes a broken lock can be the result of a poorly aligned locking mechanism or other malfunction that adds constant pressure with each latch strike or door level movement. When this is the case, a certified locksmith will explain the options available and you may well be surprised that the fix is relatively simple and cost effective. Second, check the door:
If the lock came out of its doorknob soon after it became loose, it’s possible no further damage was created to the door. However, if the lock rattled around for weeks or months, it’s likely that further damage could have been inflicted to the door itself by the heavy lock metal. If you have a loose lock, it’s best to have it looked at sooner rather than later to avoid this. Our expert locksmiths can check to see if the door is strong enough to reassemble the loose lock or if a new lock is required. Again you might well be surprised at how cost effective this can be!
Look inside your lock:
If the lock has already fallen out, you can at least now take it to your lock locksmith so they can give you an honest and expert opinion. If the door itself is strong and didn’t suffer any damage, the lock can usually be fixed on the spot for less than $20 and reattached easily to give a cheap AND safe result.
