Surviving a Home Invasion in Miami – What You Need to Know

Surviving a Home Invasion in Miami

There is nothing quite as frightening as being inside your home and someone forcibly entering your property. Unfortunately, home invasions are a reality and if you want to keep you and your family safe, it is important to know what to do and how to prevent one.

5 Tactics to Help You Survive a Home Invasion

  1. Assign a “Safe Room”. Should a home invasion occur, everyone in your household should know to gather in one particular room. This room should also contain items that will help you get through the invasion. A working phone is one of the most important items.
  2. Have a Code Word. How will your family know it is time to head to the safe room? What if everyone is in different rooms? Having a code word is a quick way to let everyone know something is wrong. Make it simple and easy to remember.
  3. Don’t Leave the Safe Room. Do not try and be a hero by leaving the safe room to confront the intruders. You and everyone else will be at risk. Stay in the room until the police arrive and get the situation under control.
  4. Choose Your Position Carefully. If you opt to use a gun for defense purposes, make sure you are in a position to use it effectively. A fatal funnel refers to a safe position on the opposite side of the door that will make you the last thing the intruder sees when entering a room. This way, you have enough time to defend yourself and your family. It also gives you enough time to assess whether it’s an intruder or the police coming through the door.
  5. Cooperate. Should the intruders get into the safe room, cooperate. Avoiding confrontation is always the first prize in situations like this. Try not to look at or speak to the intruders and aim to follow their demands as closely as possible. Weapons should always be a last resort.

Steps for Preventing a Home Invasion

Instead of having to survive a home invasion, it’s best to know how to prevent one altogether.

The first step is to make sure your property is secure. Arranging a security audit will help identify any vulnerable areas in and around your property. This includes garage doors, windows, gates, and back doors.

Next, you want to do whatever you can to strengthen and upgrade your security measures. Strong locks are not enough to keep intruders out of your home. What an intruder doesn’t want is to get caught. This is why extra layers of security such as cameras, alarms, sensors, and security gates are a good idea. Being notified of a property intrusion gives you the upper hand in dangerous situations.

Lastly, being aware will also help prevent a potential home invasion. Very often, intruders will monitor and property and your movements before they strike. Be aware of any cars that seem familiar to you and try changing up the routes you use to drive to and from work.
