Should I Rekey a New Lock?

Should I Rekey a New Lock?

When moving into a new home or relocating to a new business premises, who still has access to the property is a major concern. So, when should you rekey a new lock or change the lock completely?

If you don’t necessarily have any concerns about the security of a lock but are worried about who might still have key copies, rekeying is a good option. If you know for a fact that key copies exist, it is highly recommended that you rekey a new lock.

Another good reason to rekey is if you want more than one door to work with the same key – the front and back door for example. This is only possible if the keyhole style and lock brand are the same though.

You can check this by inserting one key into more than one lock. If the key fits but won’t turn, it is possible to rekey the lock. If not, changing the locks is your only option if you want a master key for your home or business.

You should also know that rekeying a lock won’t compromise the security of the lock. It also won’t make the lock more secure though.

With the help of an experienced locksmith, the 5 pins within the old lock will be swopped with new pins. This will leave the lock just as secure as it was before.

In terms of changing a lock completely, this is only necessary if:

  • You want to create a master key but have different lock brands
  • The lock is old and worn out

Contact Quickly Locksmith if you need to rekey a new residential or business lock.
