Types of Door Locks Commonly Used in Residential Properties

local locksmith services for residential properties in Miami

There are a number of different door locks available for residential properties and selecting the right one is an important first step to ensuring your home is secure. There are a number of different factors to consider when choosing the lock, such as whether it will be a stand-alone product or if it will be used in conjunction with another lock, as well as the size and weight of the door it will be fitted to.

Here is a short list of Quickly Locksmiths commonly used and recommended locks:

Electronic locks:

Not to be confused with smart locks which require wireless communication to lock or unlock, electronic locks are those that require the use of an additional electronic component to operate. Buried inside the door, a motor controls an electronic pulse that can be triggered in a number of ways. Most commonly, in much the same way as a modern car key locks and unlocks your automobile, a signal can be sent to the motor using a key fob to unlock the door. As the utilize a deadbolt along with cylinder level locks, most locksmiths are happy to offer these types of locks because of the combination of security and flexibility that they offer.

Deadbolts

As Miami’s leading residential locksmith, we find that these are the most common types of locks fitted to residential properties. While the technology is nothing new, a strong deadbolt offers a good level of security. Additionally, all leading manufacturers continue to innovate and produce new and improved iterations of their products so it’s worth giving our experts a call to see if one of these products would suit your property. A word of advice regarding deadbolts is that they really are best installed by an expert and we strongly suggest calling one of our team for advice.

Doorknob locks:

Technology has moved on and there are much more suitable options for securing the exterior of your property. Not only are they not as secure as more modern types of lock but they are susceptible to weather damage, making them less effective over time. However, these types of locks still work well within the interior space of your home where weather and the upmost security isn’t a concern.

3 Easy Ways to Replace Your Lock Tumblers

door locks - quickly locksmith Miami

Essentially lock tumblers are made up of three main components: springs, driver pins and key pins.

Inside the lock, there are several vertical shafts that each contain a spring, a driver pin and a key pin. The springs push down on the driver pin, which in turn presses down on the key pin to ensure all the pins are pushed down to rest uniformly on a ledge at the bottom of the tumbler. When a key is inserted, it pushes through the key pins that rest at the bottom of the lock and the springs allow the pins to move through the vertical shafts. If the correct key is used, the driver pins will line up along what is known as the shear line and the lock will unlock. Using an incorrect key, as we all know, does not work as the driver pins are not aligned.

Quickly Locksmith offer a range of services to suit all situations!

Tumbler replacement – AKA re-keying a lock:

Often referred to as ‘re-keying a lock’, a lock tumbler replacement involves replacing the pins inside the lock so that all existing keys no longer work. This can be useful in a number of different scenarios, for example if you’ve lost one or all of the existing keys or you want to prevent access for someone that has an old key. It’s also a great way to up-date security without having to replace the whole lock.

Whenever you move into a new property, whether it’s a new home or a new commercial property, here at Quickly we always recommend this option. It saves the hassle and expense of replacing the whole lock but prevents previous owners or tenants from having access to your new property!

Master key tumbler replacement:

A master key, as its name suggests, is one that will open a number of doors. In order for this to work, an extra pin is included inside all locks (called the master pin). Replacing this key or tumbler is a service that we can offer, enabling you to update your current locks to accommodate a master key or to replace an existing master key with added security.

It’s not all rosy though. While master keys offer obvious flexibility, these locking systems are slightly more susceptible to lock picking and therefore burglary, so our experienced locksmiths always recommend implementing additional layers of security on these doors. That could be a security camera, additional locks or other kinds of security systems. If you would like to discuss adding to your current security, our experts are available to offer friendly and trustworthy advice, just give us a call.

Cost Effective Ways to Secure a Sliding Glass Door Lock

Access control installation in Miami FL

Sliding glass doors are rarely used for residential front doors and for good reason. They provide vastly lower levels of security, not only in the fact that the large glass panel is easily broken, but the locking systems are generally inferior and easier to break into. While they are rarely used as front doors, they are still a popular option for rear doors as they offer more pleasant views of the exterior of your property. Therefore, it is important to ensure they are kept as secure as possible to keep unwanted intruders away.

Extra measures:

Any reputable locksmith will recommend that any glass sliding doors are backed up with additional security measures. Motion sensor alarms and cameras offer excellent security and cost much less than they used to. They offer that all important extra layer of protection that allow you to be constantly aware of any attempt to get in through your otherwise vulnerable glass sliding door which can give valuable minutes to inform the police, your security company or create some other kind of deterrent.

Extra locks:

If for whatever reason you would rather not add a security camera or motion sensor alarm, perhaps for aesthetic reasons, adding an additional lock offers slightly more protection. In this situation, our experts at Quickly Locksmiths highly recommend using Schlage high security chains inside the lower glass door track or the installation of an auxiliary lock to accompany the existing one. While these methods won’t provide the level of security you can expect from fully fledged alarms and cameras, they do offer additional peace of mind.
