Follow These Tips to Remain Safe as a Student

Welcome to college. For the next four years, you’ll try to survive 7 am classes, quirky professors and the ins and outs of romantic relationships.

For the first time, you’ll probably be responsible for your security. Let’s give you a few tips to help you pass that course with flying colors too.

Lock It Up

As locksmiths, this would be our first piece of advice.

Check the locks on the doors and windows in your apartment or dorm room to see if they work. If they don’t, have them replaced. Any student or landlord insurance you have could be invalidated by a broken lock.

Your policy also becomes invalid if you fail to lock your windows and doors and provide easy access to burglars. As many as 30 percent of burglaries happened because someone left a door or a window open.

Be Observant

Get to know those in the dorms and the apartments around you. That way, you’ll notice anyone who doesn’t belong.

While that stranger could be coming to see one of your neighbors, they could also be waiting for an opportunity to break into your home.

Hide Valuables

Your laptop, television set, tablet or game system is easy to sell anonymously once stolen. Don’t leave them in visible locations in your apartment or dorm room.

Stay Off of Social Media While on Vacation

We know you want everyone to know about your Spring Break trip to Cancun. Posting every picture on your Facebook or Instagram feed while you’re there can alert potential burglars that you’re not at your apartment

For similar reasons, letting everyone know that you’re going on that trip is also a bad idea. Better to post the pictures online when you return.

Posting while you’re away lets potential burglars know you’re not at home. Posting your destination before you go is also a potential mistake. It’s better to keep your trip under wraps and post the pictures when you get back.

Make It Look as Though You’re Home

While there can only be one you, if you plan to be away, try to make it look as though you or someone else is at home.

This discourages burglars. They like easy targets. When they think someone is home, they’re less likely to attempt to break in.

Have a friend come in to turn on the lights or house sit while you’re gone.

The Camera is Your Friend

The camera on your phone isn’t only good for taking selfies. There are several home security apps that you can download.

They use your phone’s camera to send a live feed of your apartment’s interior to any other location you choose.

This way, you can keep an eye on what’s going on in your room or apartment, even if you’re not there.

Lock Doors and Windows Even if You’re Home

When you’re studying at home or completing assignments, there’s a tendency to zone out. When this happens, you block out your immediate surroundings.

This is dangerous because it increases the risk of someone entering your home without your knowledge. Lock up before you start that study session.

Another thing students do is play their television or listen to music at volumes that prevent them from hearing an intruder. While only a small percentage of burglaries happen while someone is home, these tend to pose the most risk for victims.
