Steps for Becoming a Locksmith (Requirements for Miami)

If you are looking to make the move to a versatile industry, locksmithing is an excellent choice. Locksmithing is not what it used to be either. Today, it’s a mix of mechanical and digital services that help keep home, vehicle, and business owners safe.

The industry has evolved in recent years and there is a much higher demand for reputable professionals in Miami, Florida.

Whether you want to join the Quickly Locksmith team or start a business of your own, here is what you need to know about becoming a locksmith.

  • Becoming a Locksmith – What the Job Entails

A locksmith is responsible for inspecting, repairing, replacing, and installing locks and security solutions for both home and business owners. They are also capable of cutting and duplicating keys for a variety of lock brands and assisting those who have been locked out of their homes or vehicles.

Locksmiths generally work on an appointment basis, but are available in emergency situations too, which means the hours can often be unpredictable.

On the plus side, you can expect a different day, every day, dealing with a wide variety of clients and problems.

  • Locksmith Registration in Florida

Locksmiths in Miami don’t officially need to register or be licensed, but this does differ based on the county you plan to operate in. Dade county does require a locksmith registration.

You can refer to your county website to find out about any specific licensing and registration requirements.

In general, any locksmith looking to operate in Florida does need to undergo a background check and fingerprinting, which is processed by the FBI and Florida state. Anyone who was convicted over the past 5 – 10 years can’t operate as a locksmith.

Depending on the county, you may also need to be an apprentice for at least a year before you can work on your own.

Along with undergoing the necessary training, which we will outline below, locksmiths also need to pass an exam that tests their knowledge across 10 categories. Some of these include code equipment, key duplication, and lock opening techniques. There are also a few elective categories that can be added to the examination, including alarms and safe installation.

  • Locksmith Training in Miami

There are a number of organizations that offer locksmith training in Florida, with both in-person and online options available. Hands-on experience is just as important though in order to be a reliable professional.

If you visit the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) website, you will find a list of approved training programs. They can also assist you with the official exam you need to pass to start operating as a locksmith in Miami.

It’s highly recommended that you complete an apprenticeship or work with an experienced locksmith team before going out on your own.

  • Locksmith Associations – Is Membership Necessary?

A locksmith operating in Florida doesn’t officially need to be a part of any official membership groups. On the plus side, becoming a member of an official organization will help build trust amongst potential customers, so it is recommended.

Since every association has its own rules and regulations, you should decide which are best for you.

Don’t forget to display any logos on your website and social media profiles to make customers aware of your memberships.

  • Additional Requirements for Miami Locksmiths

In order to operate as a locksmith in Miami, you will need insurance and bond protection. In fact, you should have at least $25,000 in combined liability insurance available at all times. Again, this will differ per county.

Then there’s the tools and equipment – without them, you won’t be able to assist your customers. Depending on the types of services you want to offer, you will require a range of tools, including re-keying kits, decoders, cutting machines, and key extractors. Before you can purchase any of these tools though, you will need to undergo the necessary training, so that is the first step.

We hope this guide as provided you with the information you need to start your career as a reputable locksmith in Miami.

Our Tips For Getting The Best Locksmith Services:

We truly care about your security. Keeping you, your family and your most valuable possessions safe is why we are in business. However, whenever you are looking to hire a residential locksmith service, here are some valuable tips to make the right choice:

    FAQ

HOW DO I KNOW WHETHER MY MIAMI LOCKSMITH IS CERTIFIED?
When a Miami locksmith completes their official application process, they are issued with a Locksmith ID car. Locksmiths in Miami are required to display this card at all times when performing any services, regardless of the location.
HOW LONG WILL A LOCKSMITH TAKE TO ARRIVE?
When you’re working with the Quickly Locksmith Miami team, you can expect someone to arrive at your exact location within 15 minutes. This ensures we can get you back into your home or car as soon as possible.
    WHAT DOES A CERTIFICATION GUARANTEE?
Your certified Miami locksmith’s work comes with a complete warranty for your locks, your property (doors/ hallways, etc.), and of course your well-being. If anything happens you share no liability, and your locks & security systems are 100% insured.
CAN A MIAMI LOCKSMITH OPEN ALL LOCKS?
A locksmith that has the right tools and years of experience can open almost any lock. If that’s not an option, the lock can always be replaced. Either way, your home and valuables will be safe and secure.
CAN AN AUTO LOCKSMITH CREATE A SPARE KEY AT MY LOCATION?
When you are locked out of your car, the last thing you want to do is arrange a ride to a locksmith shop. The Quickly Locksmith Miami mobile unit will not only meet you at your location but also help you with a replacement car key on the spot.
DO I NEED THE ORIGINAL KEY TO MAKE A KEY COPY?
Not necessarily. If your original key has been lost or is damaged, a Miami locksmith can use a code cutter to identify the depth of grooves in a lock’s key code. This information can then be used to create a new key.
