Will A Smart Lock Stop Package Thieves?

a smart lock used to protect homes from the thieves

It’s November and you are just about ready to get started with your Christmas shopping. You’re ecstatic because you don’t have to face the crowds or the stores. You just need to order everything online and sit back and wait for those packages to arrive. Right?

Not so fast. As it turns out, burglars are waiting for those packages to arrive on your doorstep too. Your expensive gifts out in the open without protection are too much of a temptation

What’s a smart lock?

Smart locks replace physical locks and keys. They work electronically, relying on a signal sent over the Internet, by wifi or Bluetooth, to unlock your door.

Most of them work with a companion app that can be downloaded to your mobile phone. This companion app gives you the ability to remotely lock and unlock your door. Many can also be paired with smart camera systems that let you see who is at your door.

Smart locks also log everyone who enters and leaves through your door. This way you can tell someone has been in your home and when.

This immediately conveys certain advantages. It means you can lock and unlock your doors to allow deliveries, repair, and service personnel, guests, or family members.

Can it stop package thieves?

Burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Thieves want to get away with their loot as quickly as possible, without being seen. Packages left on their doorstep present the perfect opportunity.

A smart lock, on the other hand, presents you with options. You can unlock your door for a preset period of time for the delivery company to place your packages inside. This makes it more difficult for thieves to get them.

You also have the option of syncing your smart lock with your video doorbell. This way you can see anyone who approaches your porch or tries to take your packages.

You can then call the police, or even talk to them through the video doorbell, giving them the impression that someone is home. Remember that burglars are often deterred by people being home.
