How to fix your smart door if it won't lock?

Quickly Locksmith Miami Team Members

Today, smart locks are more common and effective than ever before. Their efficiency in easily and securely limiting access as well as the flexibility they provide in where and how they can be installed make them a must-have security feature for businesses of any size. It’s not only businesses that can benefit from the advanced security and flexibility of smart locks though and residential and vacation properties can also reap the benefits.

However, like any technology, smart locks can suffer from technical glitches from time to time, getting either locked shut or open. Don’t panic though, here are our top locksmith tips on how to fix these issues!

Check the door and smart lock alignment

Due to the way they are designed, we cannot simply look inside a smart lock. Beneath these smart mechanisms though, lies a lock much like you would see on any other door and this needs to be perfectly aligned in order to function properly. Any misalignment can potentially wear out the smart software that works inside every time the door is operated so if you spot any issues, try to realign it. This can often get the door to working as expected.

Don’t do anything more than 3 times

Most smart locks have an automated locking mechanism to increase security against burglary. This means that any action tried more than 3 times could engage this safety feature and operate the lock for half an hour or in some instances, more. If, however, you’ve already gone past this point and you’ve already tried operating the mechanism with an access code, hand or voice ID too many times, you will have to wait for the lock to reboot.

When you need to reboot

Batteries are the first thing you should check when your smart lock fails to work as expected. When batteries are weak, the lock might get stuck in the locked or open position. A red indicator means that one of the batteries is weak and you should have it replaced as soon as possible to avoid any problems.

Weak signals can also be problematic as most smart locks are connected wirelessly to a security system. When this connection is weak, the lock may need to reboot in order to reassign itself to the network and improve signal strength.

Why won’t your key turn inside its lock

Unlocking a locked door & Providing Residential Locksmith Services in Miami FL

Why won't your key turn inside its lock?

locksmith services for doors Miami FL

Keys seem to have an annoying tendency of jamming when we most need them and least expect them to. If you’ve experienced this, you’re not alone. When this annoyance strikes, the biggest locksmith pro-tip to remember is to stay calm! Try to put your frustration aside and be gentle with your lock as being overly eager with a stuck lock often leads to more problems.

Why won’t my car key turn?

When a car key is stuck inside the lock and won’t turn, it is usually down to one of two problems; either you didn’t put it in the right way or there is a security mechanism at play.

If you suspect it is because the key has been inserted the wrong way around, try to gently pull the key out, moving from side to side. Sometimes a little bump can help you to slide the key out without causing damage to both the lock and/or the key. If that isn’t the case, then it’s likely that you’re experiencing some sort of security feature. For example, a steering lock requires you to gently turn the key and steering wheel at the same time. If this doesn’t work, then it’s possible the car’s security system is involved and it may require 10-15 minutes in order to reboot.

Why won’t my home door key turn?

It is extremely rare for a key to get stuck with most modern smart locks. However, if you mistakenly use the wrong key or accidentally insert the key incorrectly, many smart locks will identify this as a ‘dangerous’ action and automatically activate the locking mechanism. The good news that in this situation, you will just have to wait and the key will come out easily within 5 minutes once the automatic locking mechanism has rebooted.

With traditional locks, just like the lock itself, the problem is often much simpler. Rust inside the lock can degrade the internal workings, just as a rusty key can cause problems too. In this case, a good quality lubricating spray, squirted inside the lock and/or on to the key will help to break down the rust and get things working again. A word of warning, though – if rust is present this method is only a temporary fix and if left unchecked, the metals will continue to degrade. Speak to your local locksmith company in order to have the problem resolved properly as soon as possible.

How to fix a lock that came out of its doorknob

Unlocking and Changing locks at a residential home in Miami FL

How to fix a lock that came out of its doorknob?

screwing and finishing brand new door installation including brand new high security lock

In most cases all that is needed to fix a lock that has fallen out of position is to re-strengthen the same areas (after all, they were chosen for a reason!) New material such as screws or locksmith super glue are the first port of call but should be monitored over a couple of days to ensure it stays strong. It must be noted though that this tip is only useful if the lock is otherwise strong and in good overall condition. If not, call your local locksmith.

First, check the damage:

Sometimes a broken lock can be the result of a poorly aligned locking mechanism or other malfunction that adds constant pressure with each latch strike or door level movement. When this is the case, a certified locksmith will explain the options available and you may well be surprised that the fix is relatively simple and cost effective. We are available to help any time, any day, so just give us a call!

Second, check the door:

If the lock came out of its doorknob soon after it became loose, it’s possible no further damage was created to the door. However, if the lock rattled around for weeks or months, it’s likely that further damage could have been inflicted to the door itself by the heavy lock metal. If you have a loose lock, it’s best to have it looked at sooner rather than later to avoid this. Our expert locksmiths can check to see if the door is strong enough to reassemble the loose lock or if a new lock is required. Again you might well be surprised at how cost effective this can be!

Look inside your lock:

If the lock has already fallen out, you can at least now take it to your lock locksmith so they can give you an honest and expert opinion. If the door itself is strong and didn’t suffer any damage, the lock can usually be fixed on the spot for less than $20 and reattached easily to give a cheap AND safe result.

How to Burglar Proof Doors

Unlocking and Changing locks at a residential home in Miami FL

How to Burglar Proof Doors

screwing and finishing brand new door installation including brand new high security lock

Often after experiencing a break in, the first thought that comes to mind is ‘how did this happen’ and ‘how can I prevent it from happening again? Quickly Locksmith in Miami is here to shed some light on how and why burglars do what they do and more importantly, how you can stay one step ahead and prevent these things from happening. As most locksmiths will tell you, understanding the weaknesses of your locks and security systems will predict the solution and prevent the most common burglary tactics from becoming an actual burglary!

Massive attack:

Home burglars are experts in their field. They have their tricks and they also know your neighborhood. Looking for a local locksmith is imperative as not only are they qualified and experts in their field, but they also know your neighborhood and the common methods thieves are using in the local area.

Speak to your local locksmith experts and ask how recent burglaries are taking place in your area. Often, you’ll find that brute force is used to break down weak wooden doors and you’d probably be surprised at how easily and with so little noise burglars are capable of doing this. 90% of burglars would rather avoid metal doors as breaking them is a much bigger task. More importantly perhaps is that doing so quietly is almost impossible and draws a lot of attention.

Speak to our experts at Quickly Locksmiths for expert advice on your local community and how we can protect your house and belongings!

Prevent direct door access:

Quickly Locksmiths in Miami know all too well that the harder it is to gain direct access to a door, the harder it is to break into the property behind it. We can provide individual assessment of your property and make expert suggestions on what can be done to limit access. For example, an additional lock on your gates or a security camera placed in plain sight to act as a deterrent and an added layer of security.

Lost your keys? Quick tips to open and locked door:

Most of us lose or misplace our keys from time to time and while it is a massive annoyance, it doesn’t need to be a disaster. The key (no pun intended) is not brute force. Trying to break down the door or into a window will usually not work out how you expect and end up costing more money to replace or repair the damage you cause. Instead, you should call an expert who will be able to help with the right tools, often saving you money at the same time.

Assess your property’s various entries:

If you do try to enter yourself, start by taking a look around for an unlocked window or door that you can safely open. Some older style locks can be opened be opened using credit cards or by inserting a sharp object inside the lock’s pins and shaking. If this does get you back inside, that’s great, but if you can do it, someone else can too and you should definitely consider improving your security.

Spare key?

It might simple, but it’s surprising how in a state of panic you might not think of it and it really should be the first port of call. Does someone have a spare key? Can they help?

Locksmith near me in Miami:

If you can’t get a hold of someone with a spare key and you haven’t been able to find a way into your property without causing damage, a professional locksmith will be able to offer the best advice in order to move forward.

Quickly Locksmith’s qualified technicians can usually arrive within 15 minutes of your call to help. Once we’ve helped you get back inside, we also offer an on-the-spot key copying service so you can hopefully avoid this annoying situation in the future!

What to Expect from Your Local Lock Shop

Quickly Locksmith Miami Local Locksmith Shop In Downtown Miami FL

What to Expect from Your Local Lock Shop

Quickly Locksmith Miami Local Locksmith Shop In Downtown Miami FL

A locksmith’s skill and craft can sometimes be overlooked and you’d be forgiven for thinking a low-price option for a quick job is OK. A quick google search for ‘locksmith near me’ or ‘local locksmith in Miami’ will generate a long list of ‘professionals’, but who should you chose? Well money isn’t everything and it’s important to consider the overall value. Quickly Locksmiths offer professional services for residential and commercial properties as well as automobiles.

For those of you outside of Florida though, we’ll forgive you for not calling us. Here’s a list of our top tips on what to look for in a more local locksmith.

Certification, certification, certification!

When your locksmith is certified, it gives you a lot of peace of mind and allows you to rest assured that whatever the job is, it will be carried out to the best standard. In order to gain certification, a locksmith goes through rigorous training. Their skill is honed over a period of time, too; this is not a month gig. Finally, all work carried out by a certified locksmith will be insured – both to the products installed and to your property. In the unlikely event that issues arise later on, this certification is important for any potential insurance claim!

Looking for a local locksmith:

At Quickly Locksmiths in Miami, we have a store that you can visit and speak to our team of experts. Some locksmiths may not operate out of a store and while this doesn’t necessarily equal a problem, there are definitely benefits to being able to visit a physical location. A store is a point of contact for any products or spares you might need in the future and good staff will always be happy to offer advice. Some locksmiths found online that don’t operate from a store may well be certified and professional, but many aren’t and may well be here today and gone tomorrow. Our advice? Look for a store!

Availability is key:

When you need a locksmith, chances are you need them soon. When you’re locked out and/or its an emergency, having to wait for upwards of 30 minutes can seem like an age. At Miami’s leading locksmith, Quality Locksmiths offer an impressive 15-minute response time – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Keep these tips in mind when searching for a locksmith so you don’t end up calling someone unreliable.

Tips to Improve Your Home Security When You Are Short on Money

Tips to Improve Your Home Security When You Are Short on Money

Changing old locks to brand new high security locks in a residence in Miami FL

Smart gates, smart locks and 360 surround security cameras all represent the pinnacle of current technology for securing your home, but the annual costs all add up and not everyone is in the financial position to go down this route. At Quickly Locksmith here in Miami, we are available to help if a smart security system is what you desire, but even if it isn’t and your budget is slightly more modest, there are a range of other solutions to choose from. Here are some of our suggestions on how to improve your home’s security, even with a tight budget.

Make sure the door and lock match well:

Smart locks and high-end security systems definitely have their place, but they’re just not necessary for many installations. Many consumers are in the market for a good quality, solid lock to secure their front and rear doors and we’d agree with this idea. Ensuring you chose a good quality lock is important as the leading brands only require minimal ongoing maintenance. Parts are usually available cheaply and guides can be found online for the DIY-enthusiasts among-st you.

What’s important to watch out for is that the materials match each other in their strength. For example, a strong lock used with a weak door can lead to problems such as the cylinder cracking the frame from the inside which can be a costly repair. A qualified locksmith can recommend a good combination of lock and door to match any budget.

Other tricks:

At Quickly Locksmith we also offer commercial locksmith services in Miami and one thing that we often suggest to small business and residential customers alike is to place a small camera in plain sight. It doesn’t even really have to be wired in and working as its presence along can offer a strong deterrent to would-be thieves.

As the leading commercial locksmith service in Miami, we’ve also learned that sometimes an alarm is a good investment. Again, it doesn’t even need to be connected to an ongoing service and the sound alone can be enough to send an unwitting burglar on their way.

Lost Your Keys? Quick Tips for Opening Any Locked Door

Lost Your Keys? Quick Tips for Opening Any Locked Door

schlage locks fresh installation

After you’re back inside, and you feel like you’ve gained your sense of control again, then you can resolve all other issues concerning your lost keys. But first thing is first – how to open a locked door when you have no idea where your keys are… as the leading locksmith company in Miami we’re here to teach you how to break in through your own doors, before looking for a locksmith near me to fix the rest of the problem right?

Who might have a spare key?

Think and try to remember, maybe a friend or your landlord? Perhaps you’ve left a spare key with a neighbor? If you made a spare key this last year – one of the people in your close circuit might be all the help you need. Miami locksmiths could make a spare key on the spot without using the original – so if you have no one available you just might need to call a locksmith company for the rescue!

Think of alternative entry points to your home:

In most cases, we always have this one window or back door we simply forget to lock… think and look for alternative ways to enter your property, so you could open your front door from the inside. It could be as simple as your living room window, a small hop and land on a couch, or right on top of your toilet… any way you can think of would come in handy.

Breaking into your own home:

Damaging your lock won’t serve you well as it might open the door and get you back inside but it will also require a professional Miami locksmith to fix. However, if you have some hardware available you could work around the windows locks / back door locks who are usually last secure.
