How to Make Your Emergency Exits More Secure

How to Make Your Emergency Exits More Secure

There is so much going on in an office and so much to maintain, and all too often, emergency exits end up at the bottom of priority lists.

Your emergency exits are designed to keep employees safe, but this doesn’t mean criminals won’t see these doors as potential entry points.

It’s essential to secure your emergency exits if you want to enhance the security of your office or commercial space.

How to Make Your Emergency Exits More Secure

1. Install a Push Bar

The first way to make your emergency exits more secure is to ensure they work as they should. Naturally, the safety of your employees is a top priority, and making sure they can get out in the event of an emergency is crucial. By installing a push bar, you not only make it easy to get out but obvious too. All that’s required is some pressure for the door to open from the inside of the building. No panic necessary.

2. Add a Lock to the Outside

While you don’t want to make it complicated for employees to be able to get out in the event of an emergency, you don’t want to make it easy for criminals to get in. For this reason, it’s recommended that you install a lock on the outside of the emergency exits of your building. This way, you need a key to get into the building from the outside, but on the inside, employees merely need to turn a knob to unlock the door.

3. Install Cameras

Another way to prevent criminals from potentially using an emergency exit as an entry point is to install cameras, which are an effective deterrent. Installing a camera above the door and in any areas leading up to the door also means you can identify criminals should they manage to get in through the emergency exit.

4. Evaluate the Door

As with any type of structure, some maintenance is required eventually. Make sure that you evaluate the integrity of your emergency exit doors at least once a year to make sure they are still structurally sound. And while you’re at it, you may also want to test any alarms that are connected to the door. In fact, some emergency exits don’t have alarms at all, so now is a good time to make sure that you have one.
