Lost Your Keys? Quick Tips for Opening Any Locked Door

schlage locks fresh installation

After you’re back inside, and you feel like you’ve gained your sense of control again, then you can resolve all other issues concerning your lost keys. But first thing is first – how to open a locked door when you have no idea where your keys are… as the leading locksmith company in Miami we’re here to teach you how to break in through your own doors, before looking for a locksmith near me to fix the rest of the problem right?

Who might have a spare key?

Think and try to remember, maybe a friend or your landlord? Perhaps you’ve left a spare key with a neighbor? If you made a spare key this last year – one of the people in your close circuit might be all the help you need. Miami locksmiths could make a spare key on the spot without using the original – so if you have no one available you just might need to call a locksmith company for the rescue!

Think of alternative entry points to your home:

In most cases, we always have this one window or back door we simply forget to lock… think and look for alternative ways to enter your property, so you could open your front door from the inside. It could be as simple as your living room window, a small hop and land on a couch, or right on top of your toilet… any way you can think of would come in handy.

Breaking into your own home:

Damaging your lock won’t serve you well as it might open the door and get you back inside but it will also require a professional Miami locksmith to fix. However, if you have some hardware available you could work around the windows locks / back door locks who are usually last secure.

How Fire Door Locks Make Emergency Exits More Secure

David Davidof - Certified Locksmith Installer in Miami FL

Most big buildings and apartment blocks have a fire door with a fire door lock and all commercial locksmiths will advocate their necessity for one main reason: their efficacy and stamina. Fire doors are highly resilient and provide safety when it is most needed.

Preventing and withholding fire and explosives:

Safety measures are a crucial aspect of any commercial real-estate plan and for good reason. Its essential to plan for the worst, even if we expect and hope for the best. A fire door and fire door lock guarantee a safe location in the event of a fire for a number of reasons. Firstly, they offer compartmentalization between different rooms, guaranteeing that fire will not penetrate them for at least one hour, no matter the ferocity of the blaze. Secondly, during the planning stages, emergency exits are placed and safety protocols are agreed upon that allow for quick evacuation in the event of an emergency such as a fire.

Why would you want to lock a fire door?

We should clarify here that the lock on a fire door is not used to lock in or out. They are left unlocked at all times except for emergency situations and will lock automatically in order to prevent fire doors from losing their strength. At Quickly Locksmith we can help any beginner developer to understand this vital detail and offer suggestions on how it can be utilized safely.

Find a Locksmith Service Near Me In Miami FL

When you need to have a spare key cut, our recommendation is always of course to ensure it is done by a reputable locksmith. Cutting a key accurately requires experience and skill and those that work in the stores set out in this post often lack the expertise to consistently create exact duplicates. If you find yourself caught out and need to visit somewhere else quickly, be aware of the potential problems and check the copied key looks is as close to the original as possible before you leave.

Automated kiosks:

These machines sound like a great idea. They’re quick, cheap and easy. They can often be found inside shopping malls or big retail stores such as Bed Bath & Beyond or 7-Eleven so they’re super convenient too. Most of the skill in creating a good copy of a key is down to workmanship though and it while machines are excellent at carrying out laborious tasks, the attention to the small details might not be enough to ensure the key works perfectly.

Hardware stores:

Most local hardware stores will also have locksmith services available. While they’re a step-up from an automated kiosk, they’re nothing on an experienced locksmith and should really only be trusted to create a simple copy of a key that is in good condition.

Locksmith store

Googling ‘locksmith near me’ will usually generate a fairly long list of qualified locksmiths that can offer the best service possible. Here at Quickly Locksmiths we can make a reliable copy of your key that we guarantee will work – saving you time and hassle down the line. Even if you don’t have the original and are currently without a key, we might be able to help, all while doing so at a fair price.

Why a Broken Door Lock Might Be More Serious than You Think

Why a Broken Door Lock Might Be More Serious than You Think

door locks - quickly locksmith Miami

Life gets in the way and we are all guilty from time to time of letting things slide that we really shouldn’t. Whether it’s a broken gate, a security camera that hasn’t filmed in weeks or a door lock that’s acting up, they’re all security risks that need your attention. Time is precious, but these things shouldn’t be left to wait until “tomorrow”. Put these things on your to-do list for today and get your security back up to scratch!

Take some advice from Miami’s leading locksmith.

Inviting the wrong people in:

Not every burglar is out to rob a bank or a jewelry store for a huge score. In fact, more than 40% of local burglaries are petty thieves looking for a quick pay-out. They go around looking for easy targets like that broken gate or weak door lock you’ve been putting off until tomorrow and once a thief has spotted these easy ways in, they won’t let up.

Cylinder and your door:

At the same time as repairing a broken door lock, a locksmith will be able to check the cylinder and the door. These 3 items all rely on one another to be aligned and functioning properly and when one is out of sync, the whole mechanism can be compromised. If a malfunctioning door lock is left unchecked for too long, it could end up damaging the cylinder and/or the door as well so it’s best to have a qualified locksmith take a look sooner rather than later.

DIY tips:

At Quickly Locksmith, Miami’s leading locksmith, support and advise is available to help anyone looking to fix their broken lock themselves. We can offer the right guidance to ensure you get things sorted properly and if we suspect the damage is beyond repair, we’ll point you in the right direction.

If at any time your door doesn’t open, don’t force it as you can cause damage to the lock or door. Quickly Locksmiths offer a 24 hour call out service for emergencies!

Types of Door Locks Commonly Used in Residential Properties

Types of Door Locks Commonly Used in Residential Properties

local locksmith services for residential properties in Miami

There are a number of different door locks available for residential properties and selecting the right one is an important first step to ensuring your home is secure. There are a number of different factors to consider when choosing the lock, such as whether it will be a stand-alone product or if it will be used in conjunction with another lock, as well as the size and weight of the door it will be fitted to.

Here is a short list of Quickly Locksmiths commonly used and recommended locks:

Electronic locks:

Not to be confused with smart locks which require wireless communication to lock or unlock, electronic locks are those that require the use of an additional electronic component to operate. Buried inside the door, a motor controls an electronic pulse that can be triggered in a number of ways. Most commonly, in much the same way as a modern car key locks and unlocks your automobile, a signal can be sent to the motor using a key fob to unlock the door. As the utilize a deadbolt along with cylinder level locks, most locksmiths are happy to offer these types of locks because of the combination of security and flexibility that they offer.

Deadbolts

As Miami’s leading residential locksmith, we find that these are the most common types of locks fitted to residential properties. While the technology is nothing new, a strong deadbolt offers a good level of security. Additionally, all leading manufacturers continue to innovate and produce new and improved iterations of their products so it’s worth giving our experts a call to see if one of these products would suit your property. A word of advice regarding deadbolts is that they really are best installed by an expert and we strongly suggest calling one of our team for advice.

Doorknob locks:

Technology has moved on and there are much more suitable options for securing the exterior of your property. Not only are they not as secure as more modern types of lock but they are susceptible to weather damage, making them less effective over time. However, these types of locks still work well within the interior space of your home where weather and the upmost security isn’t a concern.

For further information regarding residential locks and locksmith services, either visit our store or give us a call. We’re always happy to help.

3 Easy Ways to Replace Your Lock Tumblers

door locks - quickly locksmith Miami

3 Easy Ways to Replace Your Lock Tumblers

door locks - quickly locksmith Miami

Essentially lock tumblers are made up of three main components: springs, driver pins and key pins.

Inside the lock, there are several vertical shafts that each contain a spring, a driver pin and a key pin. The springs push down on the driver pin, which in turn presses down on the key pin to ensure all the pins are pushed down to rest uniformly on a ledge at the bottom of the tumbler. When a key is inserted, it pushes through the key pins that rest at the bottom of the lock and the springs allow the pins to move through the vertical shafts. If the correct key is used, the driver pins will line up along what is known as the shear line and the lock will unlock. Using an incorrect key, as we all know, does not work as the driver pins are not aligned.

Quickly Locksmith offer a range of services to suit all situations!

Tumbler replacement – AKA re-keying a lock:

Often referred to as ‘re-keying a lock’, a lock tumbler replacement involves replacing the pins inside the lock so that all existing keys no longer work. This can be useful in a number of different scenarios, for example if you’ve lost one or all of the existing keys or you want to prevent access for someone that has an old key. It’s also a great way to up-date security without having to replace the whole lock.

Whenever you move into a new property, whether it’s a new home or a new commercial property, here at Quickly we always recommend this option. It saves the hassle and expense of replacing the whole lock but prevents previous owners or tenants from having access to your new property!

Master key tumbler replacement:

A master key, as its name suggests, is one that will open a number of doors. In order for this to work, an extra pin is included inside all locks (called the master pin). Replacing this key or tumbler is a service that we can offer, enabling you to update your current locks to accommodate a master key or to replace an existing master key with added security.

It’s not all rosy though. While master keys offer obvious flexibility, these locking systems are slightly more susceptible to lock picking and therefore burglary, so our experienced locksmiths always recommend implementing additional layers of security on these doors. That could be a security camera, additional locks or other kinds of security systems. If you would like to discuss adding to your current security, our experts are available to offer friendly and trustworthy advice, just give us a call.

Cost Effective Ways to Secure a Sliding Glass Door Lock

Access control installation in Miami FL

Sliding glass doors are rarely used for residential front doors and for good reason. They provide vastly lower levels of security, not only in the fact that the large glass panel is easily broken, but the locking systems are generally inferior and easier to break into. While they are rarely used as front doors, they are still a popular option for rear doors as they offer more pleasant views of the exterior of your property. Therefore, it is important to ensure they are kept as secure as possible to keep unwanted intruders away.

Extra measures:

Any reputable locksmith will recommend that any glass sliding doors are backed up with additional security measures. Motion sensor alarms and cameras offer excellent security and cost much less than they used to. They offer that all important extra layer of protection that allow you to be constantly aware of any attempt to get in through your otherwise vulnerable glass sliding door which can give valuable minutes to inform the police, your security company or create some other kind of deterrent.

Extra locks:

If for whatever reason you would rather not add a security camera or motion sensor alarm, perhaps for aesthetic reasons, adding an additional lock offers slightly more protection. In this situation, our experts at Quickly Locksmiths highly recommend using Schlage high security chains inside the lower glass door track or the installation of an auxiliary lock to accompany the existing one. While these methods won’t provide the level of security you can expect from fully fledged alarms and cameras, they do offer additional peace of mind.

High-Security Door Locks: How to Choose the Best Brands?

door locks - quickly locksmith Miami

If you’re considering updating your current locks and you’re looking for some tips, you’ve come to the right place. As Miami’s leading locksmith, we always recommend high security locks as while they are more expensive, the extra protection and peace of mind they offer represent excellent value for money. For bespoke advice, it’s always best to come down to our store or give us a call, but what follows are our general tips to keep in mind when choosing high security locks.

Is the added expense really worth it?

High security locks demand a premium over more basic locking systems – it wouldn’t be realistic to expect anything else. Many will wonder if they’re actually worth the added expense though and while that decision ultimately lies with you, the bottom line is that they are a genuine level up in the level of security they offer. Not only are they designed to lock automatically and resist efforts to bypass them, they also have much stronger components and offer a strong deterrent to potential thieves.

Our locksmiths regularly visit the sites of burglaries and never delight in telling customers that it could all have been avoided with a stronger lock. However, that is the bottom line and if you want to guarantee the highest level of security possible, high security locks should be on your list of considerations.

What should I look for?

  1.   Strength. In part, a lock’s resilience is measured by the strength of its bolt. Look for robust, solid bolts that cannot be damaged easily. In determining the strength of a lock, weight is often a good indicator and a heavy lock will contain more metal and solid internals than a lighter weight lock. Why not come down to our store and see for yourself?
  2.   Cylinder density. As the cylinder is partly visible from the exterior of the lock, the more complex it is, the better. When choosing what’s worth the effort and what’s not, a burglar will often walk away from a complexed and difficult to pick lock. It’s important to ensure the lock matches the door though and our experts are happy to offer tailored advice on what is best for your property.
  3.   Key control. High security locks utilize patents that prevent keys from being copied without strict authorization via an ID card or the like. This means that only you or someone with this card can get a key copied!

Our experience in operating in Miami for over a decade has shown us time and again that high security locks are affordable when viewed as an investment. Nobody plans to be robbed, but the sad reality is that it does happen. High security locks vastly reduce the occurrence of burglaries and avoid the cost and stress involved.

Why not visit our store where you can browse our range of high-quality locks from brands such as Mul-T-Lock and Medeco and take the expert advice of our certified locksmiths?
