Are Bluetooth Locks Secure

Where Should I Leave My Car Keys?

As times change so does the way we use technology. In the last few years, people have turned to technology to secure their homes. It is no longer uncommon for people to use Bluetooth to unlock a house that was once secured by keys.

But does a Bluetooth lock make things safer? Is it safer to stay with the tried and tested method of keys and deadbolts?

Here’s what you need to know.

How Secure is Bluetooth?

To understand how secure your home is when being locked by Bluetooth, you must first understand the nature of Bluetooth. It is not the same as your Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi and wireless can be hacked from anywhere in the world, but Bluetooth has to be nearby. For someone with Bluetooth to hack a Bluetooth system they must be within 30 feet.

One would not be able to pick the lock of a home with a Bluetooth lock. In order to gain entry, they must either have your passcode or the ability to hack a Bluetooth system.

Is a Bluetooth lock impossible to get past?

By no means is it impossible to get past a Bluetooth lock.

It is true that they are safer than the conventional locks, but they are not impossible to break. Like a regular lock can be picked by someone with the right tools and know-how, a Bluetooth lock can be hacked. However, hacking a Bluetooth system will take a different set of skills than lockpicking.

It is also important to note that a Bluetooth home security device needs to be installed in the right way for it to be beneficial to the home. It is not going to be effective if it can be removed by a simple screwdriver from outside the home.

Improve Your Bluetooth Security

To maintain the strength of the security on your Bluetooth lock you will want to:

  • Regularly update your passcode.
  • Be careful who you share your Bluetooth passcode with.
  • Keep your Bluetooth device updated.
