Should You Change Your Locks If You Lose Your House Keys?

If you happen to lose your house keys, there is nothing left to do but call a locksmith. Does this mean you also need to change your locks though?

There is no rule that says you need to change your locks should you lose your house keys. However, this depends on how you lost your keys. Changing your locks is one of the easiest ways to negate any vulnerabilities, but this doesn’t mean the entire lock needs to be replaced.

While you could replace the entire lock, rekeying is also a viable option. Rekeying is the process of creating a new key for an old lock – the old keys will no longer work after this.

Now to decide whether changing or rekeying your lock is entirely necessary.

House keys that were stolen leave your home vulnerable, especially if the criminal is aware of where you live. Changing your locks in this scenario is essential. Another good reason to consider changing your locks is if the key that went missing is a master key.

If you have spare keys inside your house, you only need to arrange for a locksmith to get you back in. From there, they can assist you with key copes.

Deciding whether to rekey or replace a lock mainly depends on your budget. Replacing a lock is more expensive than the rekeying process. With that being said, if you’ve been meaning to upgrade the security of your home, now is the perfect time to replace your locks.
