Deadbolts are not the type of lock an intruder would try to pick first. If they did, it would be possible but certainly not simple. An intruder would have an easier time looking for other weak spots that they could use to access a home or building.
It’s important to understand that while a deadbolt is designed to be resistant to forces such as a kick, the actual mechanism is still similar to a normal door handle lock.
If you are worried about the safety of an existing deadbolt in your home, there are two lock alternatives you can consider.
1.Half Deadbolts
These locks cannot be picked, unless you are someone who has experience preparing doors for new lock installations. A half deadbolt doesn’t have a keyhole on the outside. In fact, it is almost difficult to tell if there is a lock there at all.
2. High Security Locks
While traditional locks consist of pins and a cylinder, high security locks have additional features such as side bars and dimples that make them even more secure. Even though these locks work with keys, the keys look a little different. These locks are also next to impossible for an intruder to pick.
If at any point a deadbolt become difficult to use, it’s important to get a professional locksmith to assist you with a repair, replacement, or upgrade.
