You may have locked yourself out of your home before, but what should you do if one of the doors inside your home is locked and you can’t get in?
The good news is there are several options available.
Start by making sure a child isn’t locked inside the room, which would make getting back in far more urgent.
If nobody’s inside, you have a bit more time to figure things out. For one, make sure that you don’t have a spare key lying around that you can use on the door. In fact, you may want to check that any key you’re trying to use is the right key for that room.
Next, you want to check whether there’s a window you can climb through to unlock the door. Just be extra careful if the window isn’t on the ground floor. Not an option? Try the old credit card trick. Place the card between the door and frame and gently move it towards the latch. You can now push and pull the door while moving the card back and forth to see if it will unlock.
The final option is to try and pick the lock yourself. However, you should only attempt this if you have some know-how and the right tools or you could end up damaging the lock.
And if all else fails, or you simply want to save time and frustration, call your local locksmith. They can get you back into a locked room in a few minutes without damaging your locks.
