The Most Common Home Security Mistakes

most common home security mistakes

When it comes to the security of your home you want to ensure that you are doing everything that you can to protect your loved ones. However, with a wealth of information available on the internet, it is easy to fall into the trap of damaging your home security while you try to increase it.

In light of this, we are identifying 4 of the most common home security issues and what you can do instead.

Installing the Wrong Lights

It is easy to install static lights and solar lights. They provide the lighting that your home needs to deter the common criminal away, right?

Wrong.

Static lighting does light up the home, but security lighting that works on motion sensors does so much more.

Where a static light is expected to be one, the motion light surprises the criminal and makes them think twice.

While the neighbours are used to seeing a light on all the time outside your house, a motion light can alert them and you to the  activity outside your door.

These are small points, but they make an overall big difference in protecting your home from intruders.

Having the Alarm System Outside

The internet would have you believe that having an alarm system outside your home is an excellent deterrent for would-be intruders. After all, if they can see that your home is alarmed, they are less likely to attempt to gain entry.

This assumption is not entirely correct.

While it may convince those newer to the life of crime to not put forth the effort, experienced criminals can use this to their advantage. That alarm box will tell them at what times the alarm is active and what times it isn’t. If you forget to turn it on one night, they will know the alarm is not active. Some can also use their years of experience to deactivate the alarm if they have access to the box.

Always place your alarms inside the home when it comes to home security. If need be, buy a sign warning the criminal element that your home is protected by an alarm system.

Using Fake Home Security Systems

If your home needs security and you use fake security, you have two problems.

  1. A criminal with experience is going to recognize that you are using fake security. It will not fool them.
  2. You have no security when these criminals attempt to gain entry into your home.

Overall, it’s a bad idea that may have worked once but experienced burglars got wise to it and started doing their research.

The Biggest Home Security Mistake of All

The worst thing you can do is not upgrade your security and live with a simple lock on your door as your only defense. This is an open invitation for criminals to try to gain entry into your home, that is the last thing you need.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you need everything on this list to make your home secure. A simple alarm system, a porch light, or an upgraded lock area are all things that can be a deterrent. The light especially is not something any criminal likes to see on a door, darkness is their friend. Depending on your area, you may not need a lot of security increases. Talk to your local locksmith and you will find that they have a wealth of information that can help you make the right decisions when it comes to your home security.
