Miami Break-in Prevention – 7 Tips to Help Keep Your Garage Secure

Tips to Help Keep Your Garage Secure

Not only do you store a lot of valuables in your garage, but it is also a direct link to your home. It’s important to know how to keep your garage secure to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Along with implementing general security measures, it is also essential to maintain your garage. A faulty or damaged garage is a risky garage.

We have put together a few tips based on the issues we commonly encounter at homes in Miami.

How to Keep Your Garage Secure in Miami

1. Perform a Visual Inspection

Regularly inspecting your garage ensures you become aware of signs of damage, as well as wear and tear, early on. Make sure that all components are working correctly and keep an eye out for signs of rust. It’s recommended that you get a professional to perform routine maintenance at least once a year to keep your garage secure.

2. Upgrade Your Opener

If you have been using the same garage door opener for several years, it might be time to upgrade it. Smart openers are designed to alert you when your garage door is open. Some will even allow you to close your door remotely if you left it open. Having a more modern opener can provide you with a lot more peace of mind.

3. Change the Batteries

Checking your garage door batteries regularly ensures you won’t be locked out or left with an open garage door when you want to go to bed.  The average battery lasts anywhere from one to two years.

4. Protect the Emergency-Release Trigger

Garage doors have an emergency-release trigger that can be used if the power cuts. You will find this trigger near the top of the door. Unfortunately, burglars are also able to access this switch, giving them access to your home. It’s highly recommended that you install a shield in front of the door release. The other option is to disable the safety release completely.

5. Change Your Code Regularly

If your garage door works off a keypad, make a point of changing your access code every six months. Set a calendar reminder if you feel you would forget to change it. Doing so will keep your garage much safer.

6. Install Manual Locks

Another great to increase the security of your garage door is to install manual locks on the inside. Keep in mind that you will need to be at home to secure the locks. They are also only effective you make a conscious effort to use them.

7. Install Motion Detector Lighting

Good lighting is one of the best ways to deter and scare off potential intruders, especially if they aren’t expecting it. Installing motion detector lighting will make it that much harder for potential thieves to get anywhere near your garage door or vehicles.

As long as you don’t become complacent, you can keep your garage secure. Make a point of establishing and practicing good security habits to greatly reduce the risk of break-ins and theft. This includes clear communication with family members, ensuring everyone is on the same page.
